Latest round of CVA League a resounding success

Central Volleyball Association (CVA) Beach Volleyball League’s latest Round Robin matches took place last weekend at A. Shipena Secondary School in Windhoek.The 2-a-side matches kicked off on Friday with the men’s open, setting the stage for a series of ultimate showdowns.Aloisius Ishitile and Tobias Johannes began the weekend competition with a 2-1 victory over Makanga Len and Chibi Sitengu, followed by a dominant 2-0 win against Tumeritino Lebereki and Henry Sibeso.However, their momentum was halted by Willem Shikongo and Festus Shatiwa, who bested them with a close 2-1 score. Another setback came against Matheus Mupupa and Sakeus Shaningi, who beat them 2-0.Mupupa and Shaningi were Friday’s standout duo having won all their matches, including a 2-0 win against Len and Sitengu, a 2-1 win against Lebereki and Sibeso, as well as a 2-0 win over Shikongo and Shatiwa.Lebereki and Sibeso continued to face challenges at Friday’s matches, losing 2-0 to Simeon Ndaxula and Teodor Thomas, as well as Shikongo and Shatiwa.Saturday’s resultsWomen’s open matches, held from Saturday, saw Naemi Amunyela and Helena Itula secure back-to-back 2-0 victories, first against Rauna Shitalangaho and Albertina Matheus and later against Grace Muheua and Himeezembi Nguede.Shitalangaho and Matheus picked up a 2-1 consolation win over Muheua and Nguede.Meanwhile, Soini Shipefi and Claudia Reiter displayed dominance with straight-set wins over Lea Nangombe and Angel Ouxurus, as well as Helena Shingulu and Ikiuyu Victoria. However, their unbeaten run ended in a close 1-2 loss against Amunyela and Itula.Sunday’s resultsThe action continued on Sunday, kicking off with the men’s open matches. Mupupa and Shaningi, who had a strong performance on Friday, faced a setback against Immanuel Hafenanye and Daniel Weyulu, losing 0-2. However, they bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Thomas Shilumbu and Matheus Nahenda.They once again suffered a 2-0 loss to Tomas Shivute and Messah Kambala, who went on to secure another 2-0 victory over Lebereki and Sibeso.Lebereki and Sibeso picked up a 2-0 consolation win over Abiatar Andreas and Teofelius Ndefenongo, who had earlier lost 2-0 to Mupupa and Shaningi.In the women’s open, Lea Nnagobe and Angel Ouxurus started the competition with a 2-0 win over Dorthy Nambahu and Maria Iileka.Veronica Sampapi and Emilia Shinendima overcame Grace Muheua and Himeezembi Nguede in straight sets, repeating the feat against Nambahu and Iileka.Their momentum was halted in a 1-2 loss against the duo of Soini Shipefi and Claudia Reiter. Meanwhile, Cathrine Thomas and Tuli Amakali beat Nambahu and Iileka 2-0.Log standingsSpeaking to Sport Wrap, CVA Beach Volleyball League director Thoma Shilumbu provided an overview of the log standings following last weekend’s competition.“All matches went as planned, with unexpected wins and losses in both divisions. In the men’s open division, the top three teams remain unchanged, with Simeon Ndaxula and Teodor Thomas leading the standings with 26 points.“They are followed closely by Immanuel Hafenanye and Daniel Weyulu, who have the same points, while Messah Kambala and Tomas Shivute trail just behind with 25 points.“In the women’s division, Catherine Tomas and Tuli Amakali, despite having played fewer games, have managed to hold onto their lead. Right behind them are Soini Shipefi and Claudia Reiter, followed by Veronica Sampapi and Emilia Shinendima. All three teams currently sit at 17 points,” he said.Hopeful for sports suspension to be liftedShilumbu added that the league is scheduled to conclude on 22 February, with only two matchdays remaining. “The fixtures for this weekend and the grand finale have already been drafted. Right now, we are just keeping our fingers crossed, hoping the ministry of sport will lift the suspension before our Sunday games,” he remarked.- mariud@nsh.com.na
