On their bye weekend, reigning champions FNB Wanderers can keep an eye on other matches as the Namibia Rugby Union’s premier league for 2025 reaches round two on Saturday.

Wanderers ran over FNB Reho Falcon convincingly by 61-23 in their first away match last weekend, quickly finding their top gears after conceding two “unnecessary” early tries.

Darryl de la Harpe, promoted to Wanderers’ head coach this season while Dirk Human became the club’s first director of rugby, said: “We were quite clinical in the first 20 minutes, but we also kept Reho Falcon in the game by conceding a lot of penalties.

“During the second half the guys from the bench did their job and lifted the intensity. I’m very happy that we achieved both the bonus points on offer (by scoring at least seven tries in the match – a total of nine).”

De la Harpe added: “I also know we’ll just get better from here. We only had a complete squad at training for the first time last week due to disruptions as players had been called up for the Welwitschias versus Boland Kavaliers match, as well as the first of the MTC Regional 15s tournament fixtures.

“We will get tested as the season progresses, but we are happy with where we are and looking forward to it.”

According to De la Harpe, fly-half Denzo Bruwer, lock Ruan Ludick, hooker Edward Drotsky (in his Wanderers debut, after joining from FNB Rehoboth) and scrumhalf Jacques Theron delivered outstanding performances, “as normal”.

Big battle up north

With this season’s league contested over just a single round, rather than home and away, no team can afford too many slip-ups.

On Saturday, FNB Grootfontein will enjoy their first home appearance against FNB Kudus from Walvis Bay, which will be the live broadcast match on NTV.

Kudus, with Roger Thompson appointed as director of rugby during the off-season, are currently placed first on the log standings on points difference ahead of Wanderers, after both claimed the maximum six log points last weekend.

Kudus ran out 55-7 winners over Swakopmund neighbours FNB Dolphin, scoring nine tries against one.

Meanwhile, Grootfontein won their arm-wrestle at Gemsbok Park in Olympia against Trustco United by a single point (24-23).

“There were critical periods in the game where we let ourselves down,” Grootfontein captain Wikus Jacobs said afterwards.

“But getting the four points for the win, away from home, on the opening weekend is a good result, especially since our players travelled far and did not have much time in practice together.

“By now we should be more than underdogs, but rather title contenders,” said Jacobs, who led the club to the semi-final round for the first time last year.

Saturday’s other fixtures:

Swakopmund: FNB Dolphin v FNB Western Suburbs 15:45

Rehoboth: FNB Rehoboth v Trustco United 15:45

Unam Stadium: FNB Unam v FNB Reho Falcon 15:45
