New Nalasra champions crowned
An estimated 2 000 athletes took part
The most recent edition of the games saw a record number of local authorities and competitors in attendance.
The municipality of Walvis Bay was crowned the new champion of the Namibian Local Authorities Sports and Recreation Association (Nalasra) in Swakopmund.
Forty-two local authorities were in action at the 12th edition of the games.
Walvis Bay emerged as the overall winner, followed by Swakopmund in second place and the defending champions, Windhoek, in third place.
According to Nalasra president Daniel Mouton, consistency was key for the champions.
"Walvis Bay did a good job with a consistent performance. They accumulated points steadily throughout the event, which accommodated 13 sport codes."
Record numbers
Mouton said the event saw a record number of local authorities in attendance – with an estimated 2 000 athletes competing.
"This ensured a huge cash injection for local businesses such as petrol stations, retail outlets, restaurants, and SMEs in Swakopmund. The bungalows were fully booked. The games also provide an excellent networking opportunity for local authority staff members in addition to promoting Swakopmund and its tourist attractions."
The venue for the next games will be revealed within two months. Three bids have already been received for 2024.
Organisers said an excellent and very competitive spirit prevailed throughout the crime-free event.
"This was one of the best we hosted in the history of the games. The support from sports minister Agnes Tjongarero, governor Neville Andre, and other associations – Association of Local Authorities Namibia, Association of Local Authority Officers, and the Namibian Mayors and Chairpersons Forum – and Erongo Marine, the main sponsor, was phenomenal. The venues were up to standard, and we only recorded four minor injuries."
Future
Mouton said there is much more to the event and that the aim is to have the games hosted by municipal councils.
"This will provide an opportunity to establish more sports facilities and upgrade existing ones. We want to see all local authorities participate. They should establish their own sports facilities and recreational clubs and implement wellness programmes for staff members."
He added that going forward, Nalasra would like to ensure that the games benefit charities in the communities where they are hosted. "We could, for example, introduce gate takings and donate the funds generated via this means to worthy causes."
