NIPDB aims to promote sports
Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) has embarked on a journey to help the development of sport in the country.
The board is planning on ways in which sport tourism in the country can play a role in terms of developing the fraternity.
The board is looking at concepts such as using big-name athletes from Namibia to promote sport at a global level.
NIPDB officials last week Thursday gave a presentation during a stakeholders engagement between the Sports Commission, media and federations.
The executive director of competitiveness and branding of NIPDB, Margareth Gustavo, is adamant that Namibian sport has the potential to reach greater heights.
“The good thing right now is that the incoming government has plans to make sport a second-priority area in terms of funding after agriculture.
“This means that now sport will receive proper funding and it is up to us a board to promote the sector at an international level.
“This helps with the promotion of the sector and can potentially help bring investors in the fraternity,” Gustavo said.
The NIPDB commenced operations in January 2021, taking over the functions of their predecessor, the Namibia Investment Centre (under the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade) to become the lead investment agency for Namibia.
Located strategically in the Office of the President, the NIPDB serves as the first point of call for potential investors wanting to do business in Namibia.
Their aim is to make Namibia the investment destination of choice by improving the ease of doing business in the country, starting with eliminating red tape and driving policy reforms.
It is with this reasoning that the board has been tasked to start looking for international investments towards sports, starting with the promotion of sport tourism.
Another aim of last week’s engagement was to smoothen relationships between the media and federations.
Namibia Sports Commission chief administrator, Freddy Mwiya, expressed confidence that engagements of such nature will help develop the fraternity.
