“Nothing will stop me from beating this guy. I will go there and make it happen,” declared Namibian boxer Fillipus “Energy” Nghitumbwa, with his aim set on conquering Japanese fighter Yukinori Oguni in Yokohama.
Nghitumbwa will face Yukinori Oguni in an international super bantamweight non-title fight in Yokohama, Japan, on 13 October.
During a press briefing yesterday in Windhoek, hosted by the MTC Nestor “Sunshine” Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy and co-sponsored by PstBet, promoter Nestor Tobias announced that the fighter and his team will depart for Japan six days before the fight.
Nghitumbwa currently has 18 fights since joining the professional ranks in September 2017, accumulating 16 wins (12 by knockout) and two losses, both on points.
Meanwhile, Oguni has had 26 fights, with 21 wins, three draws and two losses.
Speaking about his readiness for the fight, Nghitumbwa said: “I can’t wait for 13 October. I will make sure that I beat this guy and bring [the victory] home.”
World-ranked
Tobias praised Nghitumbwa as one of the country’s top boxers, currently ranked tenth in his weight class by the World Boxing Organisation (WBO).
“This is a significant achievement, especially in a country like Namibia, where we lack proper facilities and funds. But despite these challenges, we have managed to produce a world-rated boxer. A victory in this fight will make him eligible to compete for the world title,” he said.
He said Nghitumbwa is in top shape and the team is ready to deliver a “stinging performance in Yokohama to get him into the top three, putting him in line for a mandatory shot at the world title.
“It is, obviously, not going to be a walk in the park, but he is ready and [capable].”
Tobias extended his gratitude to the sponsors, stating that the event would not have been possible without their support.
“They help us maintain the standard of boxing in Namibia to be competitive at a world-class level. Without MTC and PstBet’s funding, we wouldn’t be where we are today. It’s also the result of hard work from our team and the boxers,” he noted.
