NSSU national athletics set to thrill

The National Schools Sport Union (NSSU) will provide an exhilarating platform for the best track and field athletics talent in the country at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek over the next two days.
The much-anticipated event will feature most of the track and field disciplines. With age groups spanning from under 12 to under-18, the competition promises to be a hotbed of youthful athleticism and fervor.
Marike Weitz, who already won the Athletics Namibia senior national title in shot put (13.13) and discus throw (43.44), is one of many outstanding athletes to watch. Sprinter Magano Naseb, beaten only by Gilbert Hainuca at the senior nationals in the 200, also qualified for the Under-20 World Championships in Peru with 20.95.
Last year's competition in Windhoek was filled with drama and excitement, as approximately 685 athletes from across Namibia vied for glory.
This year, the stakes could be a touch higher, with an expected increase in participation to around 770 athletes representing all 14 regions of the country. Such growth signifies the event’s importance as the pinnacle of school sports gatherings in Namibia.
Roger Kambatuku, the national coordinator of the NSSU, expressed his anticipation for the upcoming national athletics competition, likening it to the Olympics of school sports.
“The NSSU national athletics competition is our single biggest event of the year,” he remarked.
“With all 14 regions participating, this year's event will see an impressive turnout of athletes and officials, totaling around 770 athletes and 70 officials. It’s a testament to the dedication and passion for athletics within our school communities.”
The competition, spanning two action-packed days, will commence at 09:00 am on both Friday and Saturday, ensuring ample time for spectators to witness the thrilling displays of talent and determination.
However, organizing such a grand event comes with its challenges, particularly concerning the inequality in infrastructure across regions.
Kambatuku highlighted the financial strain faced by NSSU in organizing the event, noting that the entirety of their budget is provided by the Ministry of Sport.
“As our biggest event, it consumes a significant portion of our budget,” he explained. “While we are grateful for the support from the Ministry, additional corporate sponsorship is crucial for the sustainability and growth of school athletics.”
Despite the challenges, NSSU has received sponsorship from Coca-Cola, demonstrating corporate support for grassroots sports development. Further collaboration from corporate entities remains essential to ensure the continued success and expansion of NSSU's initiatives.
As athletes from across Namibia prepare to converge at the Independence Stadium for the NSSU national athletics championship, anticipation is palpable, and expectations are high for a weekend filled with breathtaking performances and unforgettable moments.
