Ongos FC coach Agnus Chabala Elemu says the spirit of the players in the team has come at the right time.
The Namibia Premier Football League front-runners beat Khomas Nampol 3-0 in a match they dominated from the onset on Friday night at the Independence Stadium.
The result was a statement that bolstered Ongos’ title credentials.
“This was the most important game, which required the boys to perform and they did that with flying colours.
“These players have been energetic and that is why we have produced these good results.
“The boys have this thing of playing hard for the jersey and dedicating the points we collect to the management, which I feel is special,” Elemu said.
Stanley Ndjavera opened the scoring for Ongos with a close range header.
Youngster Simon Elago produced a player of the match performance after grabbing a brace for his team.
The coach further lauded the technical team for executing a plan that would neutralise title rivals Khomas Nampol in this vital head-to-head clash.
“We had a plan for our opponents, because we know how they play and we executed it well.
“I want to thank the technical team for what they did today,” he remarked.
Khomas Nampol coach Fortune Eichab was a frustrated figure following his team’s defeat.
The police club team failed to capitalise on any chances they created in the match.
It was also a poor performance from their midfield and defence after conceding three goals due to defensive errors.
“It is indeed a disappointing day for us, because the team just didn’t clique.
“I think this is what happens when you go on a break, because it destroys much of the momentum you might have had.
“As I said in the past few weeks, our goal was to avoid relegation and we have done that.
“We will go back to the drawing board and hope for a stronger finish towards the end of the season,” Eichab said.
On Saturday, reigning title holders African Stars continued to drop valuable points after playing to a 0-0 draw against Civics FC.
Blue Waters also lost 2-0 at home to Eeshoke Chula Chula FC, while Okakarara Young Warriors lost 0-1 to Unam FC.
Tigers and Orlando Pirates played to a 0-0 stalemate at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium. The Tigers bench featured Mervin Mbakera, who was recently pushed aside as head coach of African Stars in favour of Ronny Kanalelo. Mbakera said he would prefer not to dwell on the “painful” memories of the past, but rather focus on the new assignment at hand.
