Stefanus Bonifatius made an effective comeback on day two of the African Amateur Golf Championship yesterday to ensure his further participation this weekend at the Leopards Creek golf course in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

With golfers outside the top-40 positions missing the cut-off, Bonifatius (Windhoek Golf Club) and Kyle Johnson (Walvis Bay Golf Club) are the only ones among the Namibian national team of five that has survived.

While South African players continued to dominate at the top of the leader board, Bonifatius produced the best round of 18 holes among the Namibians yesterday (75 shots). Following his first-day 82, his current total of 157 puts him in joint 37th position.

Kyle Johnson, whose 78 in the first round was the beste for Namibia, also finished day tied for 37th when he shot 79 in the second round.

Kevin Wentzel (82 and 84, tied for 58th), Todd Parker (82 and 85, tied for 58th) and Walter Heibeb (89 and 89, tied for 68th) are the Namibians who have missed the cut in the inaugural African Amateur Golf Championship.

South Africa’s Altin van der Merwe’s round of 65 saw him shoot from sixth to the top of the leader board after day two (134 shots). His compatriots Ivan Verster (135), Jordan Burnand (137) and the overnight leader Matthew Bramford (Zimbabwe, 139) are the leading contenders.
