Outjo welcomes Newspaper Cup for a second time

The 23rd edition of the Nedbank Namibia Newspaper Cup was officially launched yesterday at the Sky Gardens, Nedbank Head Office in Windhoek.
The highly anticipated football and netball tournament will be held in Outjo, Kunene Region, from 18 to 21 April 2025, marking the second time Outjo will host the tournament, the first being in 2015.
In her keynote address, the outgoing Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, reflected on the significance of the competition, pointing out its impact on the lives of young Namibian athletes.
“The Nedbank Namibia Newspaper Cup has been instrumental in shaping the dreams and aspirations of many young athletes,” she said. Tjongarero, who will retire from politics this year, commended the tournament for nurturing talent and promoting infrastructure development in host towns.
Kunene regional governor Marius Sheya expressed pride in hosting the event again, highlighting the efforts to involve all constituencies in the region to foster sports development.
“We want to see other constituencies like Opuwo and Kamanjab host this prestigious tournament in the future,” Sheya said.
He also called on Nedbank to establish a branch in Kunene, underscoring the region’s readiness to welcome visitors for the competition.
Netball Namibia president Rebekka Goagoses lauded the inclusion of netball in the tournament since 2018, noting its role in identifying and nurturing young talent.
“Netball has become a vital platform for discovering future stars who represent Namibia on national and international stages,” she said. Goagoses also urged stakeholders to prioritize netball facilities in schools and public spaces to address challenges faced by grassroots players.
Tournament details and group draws
This year’s tournament will feature matches on two football pitches and four netball courts. The defending champions in football, Omusati Region, and Khomas Region in netball, are set to defend their titles.
Since its inception in 2001, the Newspaper Cup has produced many players who have gone on to represent Namibia at both junior and senior levels.
The competition will see 14 regions compete in football and netball, with the group draws as follows:

Group A: Kavango West, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Zambezi, Otjozondjupa, //Kharas, Khomas
Group B: Erongo, Kavango East, Kunene, Omusati, Omaheke, Oshana, Hardap
Football
Group A: Hardap, Oshikoto, Zambezi, //Kharas
Group B: Oshana, Khomas, Kunene, Ohangwena
Group C: Erongo, Omusati, Kavango East
Group D: Omaheke, Otjozondjupa, Kavango West

The tournament continues to receive strong backing from sponsors, including Woermann Brock, Coca-Cola, MTC, The Namibian newspaper, Desert Radio, and Nedbank Namibia.
