Premiership table shaping up
Stars at summit
Defending champions African Stars Football Club completed the premiership weekend with a perfect record.
The Debmarine Namibia Premiership table is gradually taking shape as some teams edge closer to the summit, making for an exciting season ahead.
Over the weekend, at least three different teams held the top spot, with African Stars finishing the round as log leaders. Khomas Nampol FC began Friday at the top but were replaced by Young African FC on Saturday, before African Stars became the third team to lead the standings by Sunday night.
This was the result of mixed outcomes in matches played across various parts of the country on Saturday and Sunday.
Sunday’s matches played a crucial role in shaping the table for the rest of the week, given that no midweek fixtures are scheduled.
As it stands, African Stars lead the log with 21 points, followed by Young African FC on 20 points, while Ongos FC sit in third place with 18 points. Khomas Nampol FC, who started the weekend at the top, have now dropped to fourth.
Sunday Results
African Stars defeated KK Palace 2-1 on Sunday, having previously beaten Chula Chula 2-0 on Saturday in the north.
Okahandja United completed a successful weekend with a 2-1 victory against Young Brazilians away from home on Sunday, after beating Khomas Nampol FC by the same scoreline in Windhoek the previous day.
Bucks Buccaneers, who traveled to the coast to face both Blue Boys and Blue Waters, returned to Windhoek with a single point after holding Blue Waters to a 0-0 draw on Sunday. This followed a narrow 1-0 defeat to Blue Boys on Saturday.
Young African FC remain the only unbeaten team in the premiership after playing to a 1-1 draw against Chula Chula on Sunday, having drawn 0-0 against KK Palace the previous day.
Ongos FC and Julinho Sporting played out a goalless draw in Rundu, while Tigers FC edged Cuca Tops 1-0. Blue Boys and UNAM FC also played to a 0-0 draw at the coast.
The match between Mighty Gunners and Khomas Nampol FC on Saturday was disrupted by rain and was stopped during the second half.
Reactions
Bucks Buccaneers coach Woody Jacobs admitted that the weekend was not entirely satisfactory but acknowledged the importance of securing a point against Blue Waters on Sunday.
"Look, Jesse, we went to the coast aiming for points, and we came back with one, which we’ll take for now, given that it came against Blue Waters.
"I think the two matches tell different stories because we played much better against Blue Boys but lost, whereas we got a result against Blue Waters in a match where we created fewer chances," Jacobs said.
