Day one of the Africa Amateur Golf Championship for men went rather inconsistent for the Namibian team of five players at the Leopard Creek course in Mpumalanga, South Africa, yesterday.
As the youngest team member, Kyle Johnson (Walvis Bay Golf Club) performed the best, finishing his first round of 18 holes in 74 shots, which is two over par. His score currently places him at tied for 15th position.
Edwin Kutara (Grootfontein Golf Club) went four-over-par 76, which left him in joint 26th position.
Likius Nande (Windhoek Golf Club) had a disappointing first round of 79 shots, which left him tied for 37th and unlikely to challenge the front-runners in the tournament.
Grootfontein Golf Club pair Walter Heibeb with 88 shots (16 over par) and Stefanus Bonifatius with 91 (19 over par) are unlikely to survive the cut.
A total of 72 players from 23 nations – Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Tunisia, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe – are contesting the African Amateur men’s championship in 2025.
When last year’s tournament was held at the same course, Kyle Johnson performed best of the Namibian individuals, although his 28-over par score of 316 after four rounds put him only in 35th place overall.
After day 1 yesterday, the overnight leader was Tanaka Chatora of Zimbabwe with an impressive seven-under par 65.
Jack Buchanan (RSA) with 67 was second, one shot ahead of the tied trio Michael Karanga (Kenya), Johndre Ludick (RSA) and Roelof Craig (RSA).
