After an absence of nearly five years, Namibia has received and accepted an invitation to participate in the South African Rugby Union’s inter-provincial under-17 sevens tournament.

The team held their capping ceremony on Friday at Windhoek High School ahead of their Saturday departure to Bloemfontein.

The tournament is set to kick off today, with Namibia’s first match scheduled for 08:20 against the Golden Lions. Following that, they will face the Leopards at 11:00 and wrap up their matches on day one against Eastern Province at 13:20.

On day 2 at 07:50, Namibia will face Free State, with their subsequent opponents determined by their performance in the pool matches.

“All the matches will be streamed live on www.supersportsschools.com. Thank you to the Namibia Schools Sports Union and TransTech, who assisted the team with transportation and attire,” said Ainsley Daniels, chairman of Namibia Secondary Schools Rugby (NSSR).

The chosen ones

The team will be captained by Zack von Wielligh (Whk Gym), with Alejandro Morkel (WHS) as vice-captain. The other players are Bradley Gawanab (Duinesig HS), Tjirepo Karuhumba (WHS), Wesley Haukongo (M&K Gertze), William Beukes (WHS), Alexandro van Wyk (M&K Gertze), Jivaldo Pienaar (Pro-Ed Akademie), Jaythen Orange (WHS), Dominique Isaacs (WHS), Sammy Soobramoney (WHS) and Roberto Simbo (Duinesig HS).

Daniels said: “Recognizing the significance for our U17s, the NSSR was determined not to let this opportunity for our youth team slip away.

“As a crucial component of rugby development, the NSSR maintains a close partnership with the South African Schools Rugby Association, an organization that organizes various tournaments in South Africa, including sevens rugby.”

He said they held trials on 22 September, during which only 12 players were chosen from a pool of 60 boys who participated. The chosen ones were last week actively led through an intensive training programme by their coach, Justin Nel, ensuring they are well prepared for the upcoming tournament.

Nel will be assisted by Devano Alcock and team manager Wessel Witbooi during the tournament.
