Unam Athletics Club hosts 'Welcome Back' championships

In a spectacular display of athleticism at Windhoek's Independence Stadium, the University of Namibia (Unam) Athletics Club hosted its much-anticipated 'Welcome Back' championships over the weekend. Aimed at gearing up athletes for the challenges ahead this year, the event showcased remarkable talent and extraordinary performances.

The 3 000-metre race witnessed Pamela Vurayai from the Unam athletics club dominating the race with a remarkable time of 12:30.43. Not only did she emerge victorious, but she also participated as the only woman in the race.

On the men's front, Nasima Shigwedha, also from Unam Athletics Club, claimed victory in the men's 3 000m, clocking an impressive 09:39.66. Nico Oosthuizen from Roots Gymnasium Athletics Club secured second place with a time of 12:52.00.

The men's high jump unfolded as a highlight, with Benjamin Hendrikse from Windhoek Gymnasium Athletics Club smashing his personal best by clearing an impressive 2.04m. This height surpasses the current under-17 high jump record of 2.03m.

Meanwhile, Hallelujah Kaulinge and Edward Johnson, both from Quinton-Steele Botes Athletics Club, secured second and third place with 1.75m and 1.90m respectively.

In the women's high jump, Chrislene Klein of the Athletics Development Club showcased her dominance with a leap of 1.70m. Laura van Niekerk and Charne de Beer, representing Windhoek Gymnasium Athletics Club, claimed second and third place with jumps of 1.55m and 1.34m respectively.

The men's 1 500m run marked the triumphant return of Mohammed Bock after a hiatus, securing second place with a time of 04:30.49. Rodly Gowaseb clinched the top spot with a speedy 04:00.49, emphasising his prowess on the track.

The 'Welcome Back' championships serve as a crucial pre-season opener, setting the stage for the upcoming grand prix in Swakopmund this weekend. Athletes not only showcased their mettle, but also set the bar high for what promises to be an electrifying athletics season.
