The Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF)-endorsed Katima Kings 3-on-3 Showdown will be held on 21 March at the Katima Mulilo campus of the University of Namibia.

The inaugural competition sets the stage for a series of annual Court Kings 3-on-3 tournaments set to be held across every region in the country.

Speaking to Sport Wrap this week, tournament director Michael Mabuku said the first edition will be held in the Zambezi Region as its men’s team recently won the NBF’s FNB Namibia National Basketball 5-on-5 League.

“With our regional basketball team having won the men’s national league championships, it only felt right to start the tournament in the mighty Zambezi Region,” he said.

Mabuku assured that female teams will be included in future editions, stressing that no-one would be left out. The 5-on-5 women’s league title was claimed by the Khomas Region.

Registration and prizes

The 3-on-3 tournament is open to teams from all regions. Registrations are currently open and will run until 17 March, costing N$500 per team of three, with one additional substitute player. Only a limited 12 slots are available.

Interested teams should contact Zambezi Kings at 085 306 69051, 085 714 3939, or 085 774 6001.

The tournament champions will walk away with a cash prize of N$10 000, with the runners-up taking N$5 000 and the second runners-up N$3 000.

Regarding preparations, Court Kings 3-on-3 revealed on their Instagram page that the country’s 3-on-3 champions of previous competitions, the Tax Collectors team, has officially registered to compete in the event.

“Their participation raises the stakes and gives every team an opportunity to test themselves against the very best,” the update read.

Mabuku said the event’s preparations are well on track. “The NBF has sponsored us with basketballs for the competition.

“We also have Fresh FM on board to help promote the event, and Pulse Events and Consultancy is sponsoring alongside Point Blanc, which is handling our design, advertisement and marketing. We have also received an anonymous sponsor for the event. We are still waiting on more companies to come on board,” he said.

Celebrates talent

Mabuku said the Court Kings 3-on-3 Showdown aims to celebrate talent, passion and community, as it provides a competitive platform for players to showcase their skills and grow in the sport by engaging in a high-energy basketball experience.

“These types of competitions are fast-paced and dynamic. They demand teamwork, strategy and adaptability, which are key qualities that define great athletes. By bringing teams together from different regions, we are not only promoting the sport but also fostering unity and sportsmanship.”

He added: “With a prize pool of N$18 000, we are giving players a real incentive to push themselves while creating an opportunity for networking and exposure.

“Whether you are an experienced baller, or an up-and-coming talent, this competition is where you prove yourself. We encourage all players and teams to be part of this exciting event and make history on the court.”
