Old Boys maintain league dominance
Ceiling Centre WHS Old Boys 1 on Saturday afternoon won the one-day premier league final in Pionierspark with 142 runs versus Samsung Wanderers 1 in an exciting encounter to keep the cup for the third year in a row.
A fierce and feisty Old Boys team (322 runs for 7 wickets in 50 overs) on Saturday bullied a hapless Wanderers side (180/10 in 40.3) with finesse.
Old Boys lost the toss and was sent in by the guest to bat first. Barely nothing went wrong for captain JP Kotzé and his fellow batsman finding the sweet spot of their willows amassing a massive 322 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs.
Opening batsman Gerhard Janse van Rensburg contributed 85 runs, Dylan Leicher on number three added 51 while Kotzé on 4 with a blitzkrieg blasted 84 from 50 deliveries. Zhivago Groenewald (on 6) and Dirk Theunissen (on 8) smashed 30 and 34 respectively to put Wanderers under immense pressure.
For Wanderers, Francois du Plessis took 3 wickets for 44 runs, Louis Peters 2/69 and Danie van Schoor 1/64.
The bowlers from Old Boys did not allow the White Stallions any room with the ball and destroyed partnerships on a regular basis. The home team managed to put 180 runs all out on the scoreboard in 40.3 overs.
Opening batsman Niko Davin with 40 and wicketkeeper Michau du Preez (on 5) with 54 runs were Wanderers’ best performers on the day. The rest of the batsmen could only get 15, 2, 4, 9, 25, 2,10 and 0 runs between the 7 of them, totalling 67.
Spinners Zhivago Groenewald (2/41), Donovan Zealand (2/39) and Malan Kruger (2/20) each claimed two victims for Old Boys while the quickies Melrich Robyn (1/13), Janse van Rensburg (1/0) and Dylan Leicher (2/12) finished off the rest. [email protected]
