A love for the ages
Tied the knot in 1957
Anne Marie (89) and Jan Stührenberg (90) celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in style on Saturday.
A 65th wedding anniversary is referred to as a Blue Sapphire anniversary.
The lovebirds went on a cruise in a vintage 1925 Dodge Brothers Touring from their residence in Ebony Street in Kramersdorf through the streets of Swakopmund. They turned heads and waved to curious onlookers on their way to the Strand Hotel, the lighthouse, and the old jetty – where they stopped for a brief moment to enjoy the sea breeze, sights, and sounds of the ocean before being dropped off for a ceremony organised in their honour at Alte Brücke.
Asked about the secret of the longevity of their marriage, Anne Marie said it takes a woman with a lot of patience to make it this far. “He is a good man and I like a tall and strong man.” Jan jokingly responded that a shot of brandy a day kept him motivated all the way.
The couple met in Stuttgart, Germany, five years before they tied the knot on 25 October 1957 in Otjiwarongo.
The Stührenbergs were farmers in Sandveld and now enjoy living in Swakopmund.
They have four children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
