Coastal athletes gain momentum
Lightning fast
The top performing athletes from Walvis Bay based schools competed to qualify for spots at the Regional Championship.
More than 500 athletes from 19 schools in the u/13 to u/19 age groups participated in track and field events at the Walvis Bay School Sports Zone (WBSSZ) Zonal Athletics Championship held at Walvis Bay High School.
Augustinium August ǁGaroëb, the chairperson of WBSSZ, confirmed that numerous athletes met and even went beyond the regional qualifying standards. “We will have close to 200 athletes from Walvis Bay competing in different events for the regionals.”
The top performing school was Kuisebmond Secondary School with 377 points, closely followed by Walvis Bay Private High School with 367 points, and Flamingo Secondary School with 365.90 points. The female athletes from Kuisebmond Secondary School dominated the proceedings with 229 points while the male athletes from Walvis Bay Private School set the pace with 170.50 points.
According to ǁGaroëb, some of the top athletes in action were Clemence Mutilifa (u/19 girls) from Walvis Bay Gymnasium and Guanito Noble, an u/15 male sprinter from De Duine Secondary School, who put in strong performances in 100 and 200-meter sprints. “Both produced superb results and can bring great results for the zone at a regional and national level. Mutilifa was the fastest sprinter with 10.53 seconds in the (u/19) 100 m and Guanito recorded 10.59 seconds for the 100 m and 23.12 seconds in the 200 m sprints. I am confident that we will produce very strong sprint performances at regional and national levels aside from the two stand-out sprinters.”
The Regional Championship will be hosted in Swakopmund Venita Stadium on 1 April.
ǁGaroëb also singled out Hilma Kasheeta (u/15) in the discus and shotput items. “She is a young talented athlete from Kuisebmond Secondary School who recorded a distance of 22.95 m in discus and 9.42 m in shotput - both her personal best records.”
He added that Walvis Bay generally has a competitive squad. “The athletes are really motivated to compete at a high level and the input of coaches and teachers was visible on the tracks. We did really well as a newly elected executive committee that hosted an event of this magnitude for the first time. Everything went smoothly and we did not have many problems or complaints.”
This weekend, all eyes will be on Kuisebmond - where the u/9 to u/12 Zonal Championships will be hosted on 11 March.
