Grumpy’s fishing report
The huge swells that hit our shores made it very tough for those anglers that went fishing this past weekend.
The surfers however had a great time, while Solitude and the Zeila Wreck produced heaps of galjoen. These fish are really strong swimmers and tend to go on the bite when the seas are rough. They can be targeted on various baits including white mussels, black mussels and redbait.
Redbait has a strong smell so some anglers tend to use latex gloves to put them on the hook, as the smell can stay on your hands for a couple of days. Redbait can be picked up only if it is washed up on the beach. Good areas to pick up red bait is Tolla se Gat, Sarah se Gat and Mile 68. It’s quite abundant there with Vierkant Klip also having some.
Mile 108 rendered some decent kob this past week but they went slightly off the bite with the swell picking up. The conditions for this week look favourable with calm seas, so one can expect some better fish being pulled ashore. Tomorrow is also new moon.
The second Interclub Angling Competition will be held at Mile 14. The competition is for affiliated members only. The participants target mainly sharks and accumulate points from the five competitions for the year and so stand a chance of making the Namibian teams.
Anglers from all around the country compete in this competition. The area is usually a stretch of about 10km wide with weigh masters patrolling the beaches and weighing the sharks caught which then quickly get released to fight another day.
These weigh masters dedicate their off day to help these anglers and we thank them for doing so. The public can drive along the beach and support and cheer these competitive anglers on this coming Saturday.
There have been quite a few spotted gulley sharks around this past week. Henties Bay based fishing guide, Louis Fenaux said he got stuck into quite a number of big spotties. Good areas to search for these sharks are Trappies and Popeye just north of Henties Bay. This species can be targeted along the entire coast line and if you fish for kob you will inevitably catch some of these sharks. Rays and sandsharks also readily took the anglers bait.
A coolbox will keep your bait frozen and thus one doesn’t have to throw the thawed bait away at the end of the day. The bait will be more firm and easier to put on the hooks. This is especially true with baits that become too soft once thawed, like sardines. A soft sardine will probably disintegrate once it hits the water at high speed so a firm semi defrosted sardine will give you a better pick up rate.
Tight lines!
