It's time for bragging rights again, in the latest edition of the Windhoek High School vs Windhoek Gymnasium Interhigh.
The first edition of the annual Interhigh was hosted by Windhoek High School (WHS) on 17 June 2017. The FNB WHS Vegkop pavilion had over 5 000 spectators who showed up to enjoy the main event, the rugby match between WHS and Windhoek Gymnasium’s first rugby teams.
WHS won the match 30-23, which is where the Interhigh officially started.
For this year’s prestigious event, Windhoek High School is once again the hosts. With different sport codes, including rugby, netball, hockey, basketball and football, there is a bit of everything for spectators to enjoy.
This year’s Interhigh started on Tuesday with an exciting triathlon around Windhoek High School in the city centre. Gymnasium ensured the winning points in the senior races, with national age group cyclists like Delsia van Vuuren and Roger Surén in the thick of the action.
An interesting T20 cricket match between two star-studded old boys elevens had to be postponed to next week, due to the rain to Tuesday night.
On Saturday will be the last day with basketball, netball and the first rugby teams being the main event.
Last year Interhigh took place at Windhoek Gymnasium and the rugby team was crowned champions as they beat WHS 25-17 – an exciting clash before the Standard Bank U19 Super League which Gymnasium also ended up winning.
The rivalry has been on for the past six years, good friendly competition where both schools are fully committed and dedicated in making sure they have the bragging rights.
Abrie Myburgh, principal of Windhoek Gymnasium, said at the opening: “A school’s culture is very important and we are privileged to be part of another interhigh. It’s a highlight on our yearly calendar and we hope the learners can make the most of it.”
WHS principal Dinette de Beer said: “We are all very excited to be the hosts for this year’s interhigh. Culture is very important and with interhigh, that’s how we make sure the tradition lives on.”
