Splashing fun at Canoe Combat
For a good cause
Twenty-eight corporate teams were in action at a canoe combat event serving as a fundraiser for a local school.
The 11th edition of the Walvis Bay Gymnasium Canoe Combat did not disappoint and delivered some splashing races.
The Local Disappointments won the B race - which catered for the top four performing teams - and were crowned as overall champions of the entertaining event hosted at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club. The champions finished with a time of 7:37 ahead of Synapse with 9:11 in second place, the Namib Desert 4x4 Club with 8:00 in third, and PKF – FCS 1 with 8:50 in fourth position.
The Local Disappointments team captain Cyla Jansen van Rensburg, said winning was an amazing feeling. “We are a group of friends who decided to form a team and entered the competition at the last minute. We did it just for fun and now that we are the reigning champions, we will have to be back next year to defend our title.”
NOSF Namlorians won the A race section - which accommodated the second-best performing teams who made it into the top eight groups. The winners finished in a time of 9:23, followed by Tidal Waves with 9:19 in second place, Sail Mates with 9:42, and Dream Team with 9:52 in fourth position.
Twenty-eight teams consisting of eight members each entered the competition. Two persons from each team had to row one of the required four laps in each race.
Xvarius Smit said the day panned out perfectly. “The venue and the weather complemented each other perfectly. Although it was a combat, the purpose was to have fun and raise funds for our school. Money generated is invested in education and sports or wherever we may have a need.”
The event also provides participating companies with an opportunity to do some team building. “The teams really gave it a go and the competition was tight. The teams are always very competitive. Overall the event was well attended and the food and games on offer for children were also fantastic.”
