Unam, Wanderers on fire again
Club rugby
Resurgent FNB Unam stormed to a 38-19 victory against Trustco United in the Namibia Rugby Union’s Premier League at Unam Stadium on Saturday.
Although United scored their first try within 3 minutes from the kick-off, it was Unam that took the encounter by the scruff of the neck to gradually overpower the Philistines.
Unam’s powerful runners and direct physical approach got the better of United, who had few answers to the students’ physical onslaught in a clean and entertaining match.
The hosts outscored United five tries to three, with the winners’ five-pointers rounded off by centre Camlo Martin (2), lock Bjorn Kazondunge (2) and flanker Rowan Jansen.
Eighth man Dean Blom had a good day at the office for United when he went over twice, while flanker Thehard Lintvelt visited the white wash as well.
Full-back Renier Benade narrowly missed with a drop kick, but was successful with two conversions.
United however failed to secure a fourth try and thus a bonus point. Coach Robbie Dickson’s men (third) will be relieved that a nine-point gap still remains between the top three and the chasing pack.
At Wanderers
Hooker Obert Nortje scored a remarkable five tries as FNB Wanderers stormed to a 83-5 home win over FNB Grootfontein.
Left wing Nico Maartens and full-back Johan Zaayman each scored two tries for the winners, along with more tries by centre Niel Holtzhausen, flankers Darius von Solms and Sheron Rossouw and prop Chris Swanepoel.
Fly-half Eugene Jantjies added seven goal kicks for the defending title holders and current log leaders, while DJ Holtzhausen (centre) converted one.
Grootfontein’s only try was scored by nr. 8 Tehan Martinson, although their long trip home would have been consoled with their second team’s surprise 22-19 win against the NRU Reserve League champions Wanderers II.
Kudus beat Suburbs
FNB Kudus strengthened their second log position with a late acceleration to open up the gap and beat FNB Western Suburbs 31-20 in Khomasdal.
Although the home side struck first with a try and held a 14-13 lead at halftime, they could not keep up in the final 20 minutes. Possibly the effort required from six forwards to make up for the simultaneous yellow cards to loose forwards Dhale Cloete and Ronald Vogel after a dust-up before halftime proved too much. Vogel (concussion) and fellow loosie Kenneth Seibeb both left the field injured during the second half.
Kudus fly-half Geraldo Beukes was hugely influential with his long-range tactical kicking and contributed 16 points with a drop goal, two conversions and three penalties. Kudus’ tries were scored by lock and captain Tersius Arangies, wing Jayden Bussel and full-back Aston Mukwiilongo.
Suburbs scored tries through wing Dumarcho Hartung and flank Kenneth Seibeb. Bronwon Willemse (scrum-half) added ten kicking points.
Rehoboth derby
FNB Rehoboth proved too strong by 44-25 against FNB Reho Falcon in the town’s derby match.
Rehoboth’s six tries were scored by centre Nando Dentlinger (2), scrumhalf Miquel Busch and the forwards Chase Diergaardt, Titus Mathias and Delano Coetzee. Fly-half Henrique Olivier was on song with four conversions and two penalties.
For Reho Falcon, loosies Cameron Markus and Keynnen Basson scored tries, as well as left wing Prince January, while right wing Enrique Husselmann landed four penalties.
Women’s League
United’s Bokkies came up victorious against Unam, beating the home side by 15-7. The start of the match was delayed by 20 minutes (until 12:50) until paramedics arrived to be on standby.
United’s scrumhalf Samantha Bock and utility back Nicole Philander went over for a try apiece, while fly-half Michelle Slinger slotted one conversion. Rejoice Kakundi scored Unam’s try and Mandy Hansen added two points with a successful conversion.
Reserve League
Trustco United II beat FNB Unam II by 29-22 in the NRU Reserve League. The two sides both scored 4 tries, but the kicking boot of fly-half Nazume Swartz made the difference.
United II’s tries came from the centre pair Mbiri Mbai and Felix Humphries, lock Desmond Grobler and hooker Callie Swanepoel. Swartz added 9 points, slotting three conversion and one penalty.
Tries by winger Keanan January (2), centres Tadiwanashe Mkudu, Clever Dhliwayo and 1 conversion by fly-half Arnon van Wyk secured Unam II’s points.
