NWR cease shuttle operations in 2x4 area in Sossusvlei

Exclusive shuttle operations from Sesriem Camp

Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) has announced that effective today there will be an essential change in its shuttle service operations in the Sossusvlei area.

Spokesperson of NWR, Nelson Ashipala said that it will cease to operate the shuttle from the 2x4 area in Sossusvlei and will now exclusively run the shuttle from the Sesriem Campsite.

He said that clients who have already booked shuttle vouchers/tickets to Deadvlei will now be ferried from the Sesriem Campsite instead.

Similarly interested clients are requested to also buy their shuttle tickets at the Sesriem Campsite which also will be departing from the Sesriem Campsite.

“We encourage all guests to make the necessary arrangements and plan their visits

accordingly. Our team remains committed to offering the best service possible and will be

available to assist with any queries or concerns regarding these changes,” said Ashipala.

This follows after the tourism industry recently expressed their displeasure after the private company that received a 25-year contract to transport tourists to Sossusvlei erected a boom gate without any warning.

This gate blocked the 2x4 parking lot in Sossusvlei and tour operators had apparently also been turned away from the park entrance point.

The contract was awarded to About Africa earlier this year after Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) failed to submit its tender on time.

The concession will also give About Africa the right to operate a campsite, offer guided walking tours and to develop and operate a kiosk area.

The tourism ministry at that time in a statement said that No other tour operator, apart from the concessionaire “About Africa Co”, is allowed to pick up tourists at the 2x4 parking lot in Sossusvlei and drive them into the vlei.

It said that “About Africa Co” was awarded the contract and is now the sole concession holder.

The ministry reassured stakeholders and the public that the concession does not prohibit other tour operators from accessing Sossusvlei for business.

It said that rather this Concession will create business for NTB-registered tour

operators, by restricting illegal tour operators and unsuitable vehicles such as busses, trucks and 2x4 vehicles.
